“Ana Bekoach Gedulat Yemincha Tatir Tzerura…”
This seven-line mystical hymn is attributed to Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana, who lived in the first century CE.
According to Kabbalistic tradition, the prayer is based on the 42-letter Divine Name mentioned in the Talmud:
“Rabbi Yehuda said in the name of Rav: The 42-letter Name is not transmitted except to one who is modest, humble, and self-disciplined.”
The sacred sequence is encoded within the first forty-two letters of the Book of Genesis — from the word Bereshit to the letter Bet of Vavohu. Through a secret Kabbalistic formula, these letters form the mystical 42-letter Name.
Rabbi Nehunya ben HaKana foresaw a time when humanity would lose its spiritual connection, and therefore composed this prayer whose initials correspond to that sacred Name.
According to Kabbalah, each combination of letters represents a spiritual level within one of the seven Sefirot:
