This seven-line piyyut is attributed to Rabbi Nehunia ben HaKana from the first century CE.
According to the Kabbalists, the prayer is based on the 42-letter Divine Name mentioned in the Talmud: “Rabbi Yehuda said in the name of Rav: The 42-letter Name is entrusted only to one who is modest and humble, spiritually mature, not quick to anger, does not get drunk, and is not overly strict in judgment.”
This Divine Name is encoded in the first forty-two letters of the Book of Genesis, from the word “Bereshit” to the letter Bet of the word “Vavohu.”
The letters are transformed using a secret kabbalistic formula to form the 42-letter Name.

Rabbi Nehunia ben HaKana foresaw a time when people would lose spiritual connection, and therefore composed a prayer whose initials conceal these sacred combinations.

According to Kabbalah, each group of letters corresponds to one of the seven sefirot:

Abg Ytzh – Sefirat Chesed: energy of giving – Capricorn and Aquarius (Saturn)
Kra Shatan – Sefirat Gevurah: energy of removing negativity – Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter)
Ngd Yksh – Sefirat Tiferet: energy of abundance and light – Aries and Scorpio (Mars)
Btr Tzag – Sefirat Netzach: overcoming obstacles, emotional resilience – Leo (Sun)
Hkb Tna – Sefirat Hod: intuition, spiritual intelligence, expanded perception – Taurus and Libra (Venus)
Ygl Pzk – Sefirat Yesod: energy of redemption, accelerating spiritual growth – Gemini and Virgo (Mercury)
Shkv Tzit – Sefirat Malkhut: renewal, clearing physical, emotional, and spiritual blockages – Cancer (Moon)
